This is a very rare variety of turkey, with flat brown, chocolate-colored feathering.
Production: Chocolate Turkeys get high ratings for meat quality and quantity; they are considered one of the meatiest of all heritage turkey breeds.
Temperament: The Chocolate Turkey is a hardy heritage breed. They are great foragers, quite active, and friendly in general. They are known as one of the most non-aggressive and gentle of the turkeys. Chocolate Turkey Hens make good mothers.
History: The origins of the Chocolate Turkey are a bit vague, but they were a popular variety in the Southern U.S. and France in the mid 19th Century Pre-Civil War era. During the Civil War, however, breeders of Chocolate Turkeys declined, and the breed never regained its initial popularity and declined to just 12 birds in existence. To combat the genetic limitations of working with only 12 individuals, the breed almost had to be re-created from scratch, bringing in Bronze, Narragansett, and some Bourbon Red genes. Though currently still very rare, Chocolate Turkeys are starting to make a comeback.
Colors: Both male and female turkeys are a flat chocolate brown in body, shanks, and feet. Young Chocolate Turkeys are cocoa in color and have a white face.
Conservation Status: Critical
Weight: Tom: 33 lbs; Hens 18 lbs.
